Craving for a restaurant-style tender Beef and Broccoli? Get ready, because you’re in for a treat! What makes this dish extra tender and unique is its cooking process! It’s cooked with a tender Beef Shank, sauteed in a garlicky soy sauce, crisp broccoli, and poured over a bowl of beef-flavored rice! Get ready, because you’ll be enjoying a whole new way of cooking The Best Tender Beef and Broccoli Stir-Fry Bowl you will ever have!
As a matter of fact, no matter which Chinese restaurant you visit, you can always find the classic Beef and Broccoli! Right?! It’s usually served alongside Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, Crispy Egg Rolls, and a plate of Chow-Mein! My family ALWAYS wants to order Chinese takeout, but why order takeout when you can create it at home?
So Let me Tell You a Little Back Story About This Recipe…
As a busy individual (as we all are), I boiled a few pieces of Beef Shank the day before and only had an hour to cook it. Because life throws curve balls at us at times, we just have to drop everything and turn to it later! I had planned on making my family’s favorite Classic Borstch Soup that day but of course, it didn’t work out!
Later that evening when I got back home, I placed it into the fridge hoping I would have better luck the next day. And then again, I was wrong. Another busy day came across my path, came home starving, and decided to cook a simpler meal that took less chopping! So I decided to create a fast Beef and Broccoli meal with my boiled beef!
At first, I felt pretty iffy creating this dish! For one thing, I wasn’t sure if boiled beef would have passed the “Best Meal of The Day” by my family! After I was done making this dish, my family asked for seconds and asked for leftovers the next day! After all, it’s my new favorite way to make Beef and Broccoli!

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS TO THIS RECIPE
- Switch up the type of Beef – As I have shown, there are plenty of other options to choose from above. Just pick your preferred type of beef if you choose to change the beef shank.
- Skip the Boiling Step – If you choose to ditch the boiling part I would suggest choosing a different type of beef cut and adding a tiny pinch of baking soda to tenderize the beef more! Go ahead and cut your raw beef into thin 1/4″ thick strips, marinate, and follow the same cooking instructions.
STEPS TO MAKE THIS BEEF AND BROCCOLI
TIPS BEFORE STARTING THIS RECIPE:
- Chop In Advance! – Make sure to prep your vegetables and chop them in advance. This will help the cooking process flow perfectly!
- Fresh Broccoli vs Frozen Broccoli (Blanched) – I don’t prefer using frozen broccoli because it is already pre-cooked and frozen. I prefer it to be fresh. But if you choose to use frozen, make sure to thaw completely and pat dry before placing it into the pan along with the beef.
- Make a Thicker Sauce – If you add cornstarch to your beef, as a result, it will create a thicker sauce.
Step 1: BOIL BEEF
Firstly, place the beef shank pieces into a pot of water and boil on high heat for 1 hour. Remove the foamy film that collects from the top, disregard it and occasionally stir.
Step 2: COOKING RICE W/ BEEF BOUILLON
Secondly, start by rinsing your rice in cold water about 2-3 times and strain in a strainer. Place a tablespoon of olive oil and place rinsed rice into a pot. Fill bouillon from boiled beef, into our pot of rice and make sure your rice is fully submerged. Close the lid of the pot and put the fire on high until it comes to a full boil. Move the pot to a smaller fire, lowering your heat to low, and allow this to cook until done.
Step 3: CHOP/MARINATE BEEF & VEGGIES
Thirdly, fillet your beef down the center to make two equal pieces. Chop your beef into thin 1/4″ thick strips and place into a large bowl. Grade your Garlic and fresh Ginger and set it aside. Start to marinate your beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil, and give it a mix. Set this aside and allow this to marinate for 25 minutes in the fridge.
Step 4: COOKING BEEF
Lastly, heat oil in a large skillet, add in your beef strips and saute for 2 minutes on high heat. Then add grated garlic, ginger, and sesame oil then saute for another 1 minute. Add 1/4 cup of soy sauce and 1/4 cup of water then add your broccoli. Place cover and allow the broccoli to steam and cook for another 2 minutes on high-medium heat. To thicken our sauce add a pinch of cornstarch. Serve with a side of rice, top it with roasted sesame seeds and a spoon of chili sauce and make it a night you’ll never forget! ENJOY
WHAT TO SERVE BEEF AND BROCCOLI WITH?
- Rice Noodles or Chow Mein Noodles
- Stir-fried veggies like Bok Chow, Green Beans, Shredded Carrots or Eggplants
- The Classic Steamed Rice pairs perfectly with your sauce!
All in all, my family loves Asian-inspired dishes and loved this “NEW” boiled beef version of the Beef and Broccoli take-out-style recipe! As a matter of fact, this fun and full-of-flavor meal is packed with some amazing flavors. As long as you add Garlic and ginger (which are the key ingredients) you won’t regret it!
