THE HISTORY BEHIND THIS LOVELY DISH CALLED “CUTLET”
Cutlet got its name from the French côtelette, côte which refers to a thin piece of meat from any of these types of meats such as veal, pork, chicken, mutton, beef, or turkey. Throughout the years it has found its place in almost all cuisines of the world, be it French, Italian, American, Indian, or Russian. Many cuisines have created their own versions and names of cutlets. Here are a few other names for famous cutlet recipes (Schnitzel, Vanillerostbraten, Croquette, Kotleta).
They all make it differently, sometimes it’s coated with flour, egg, and bread crumbs, then fried in a pan with some oil. Some even soak bread into milk and add potato to the minced meat. I have also tried to make Vegetarian Cutlets which are made with potato cutlets, cauliflower, zucchini, lentils, chickpea cutlets, and many more! Follow back on our page for our future cutlet recipes, will be posting them very soon! As I mentioned many different versions of this recipe and all are so very good!

VARIATION IDEAS OTHER THAN BEEF CUTLET
This is by far one of my favorite recipes when it comes to cutlets! But, if you’re looking to change it up here are some other add-ons and variations you can try out…
Yummy Comforting Cutlets– Do you ever crave something comforting to eat? This recipe is already so comforting, but you can add some pasta or a bed of rice next to them and it will be an extra fulfilling meal! You’ll want to take a nap after this combination!
Bring on the Spice to your Cutlets 🌶️ – If you love spicy food add some zing of fire! You can add some cayenne pepper, more black pepper, or hot sauce of any sort. I prefer sriracha sauce – my favorite, it brings the flames and a unique Asian taste!
No Carb Cutlets– If you’re looking for a low-carb option try making your cutets without breadcrumbs. You don’t have to replace it with anything else. The egg in the mixture will hold it together as the cutlets fry. (Tip: Don’t flip cutlets over until one side has browned and completely cooked.)
Cutlets without Salt – You can always alternate any recipe by excluding the salt and replacing it with Mrs. Dash Seasoning which will give it more flavor!
Add Veggie Stir-Fry to your Cutlets – If you trying to watch your waste or calories you can add a vegetable stir-fry next to your Cutlets as well! (Cabbage or Bok Choy, Carrots, snap peas, Baby Corn, Sliced Bell Peppers, or any vegetables of your choice.)
Play with other Flavors – You can adjust the flavors to your taste! Instead of our ingredients you can add or replace with…
- Taco Seasoning if your craving for Mexican Food
- Curry or Garam Masala for an Indian flavors
- Keep the same ingredients in this recipe and add Sumac fresh/dry Mint and replace our Marinara sauce with Ziziki/Jajux dipping sauce for a Mediterranean taste
- Garlic, Ginger and Soy sauce salt and pepper, and red pepper flake sauce for an Asian-inspired meat ball – After done frying drizzle some Eil sauce over the cutlets – Yum!

STEPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT BEEF PATTY CUTLETS IN TOMATO MARINARA SAUCE
Here are a few things to know before you start creating this recipe:
- Make sure to grade the onion either with a food processor or with a cheese grater. Note: The juice of the onion will enhance the flavor and keep the meat from drying out while frying
- Place both grated and chopped onions for more flavor
- Pat your beef patty, this helps your meat tenderize as you form them
- When preparing sauce make sure to sautee garlic and Italian seasonings in olive oil this will help bring out more flavors
- I prefer to make this recipe with 85% lean ground beef instead of 90%, this will allow it to be super moist.
- You can use your choice of cooking oil, but I love cooking with Olive oil if has its nutty flavor. Olive oil is also known to be a healthier option to saute your meat and veggies in. You can also use Corn oil or Vegetable oil. If you use Vegetable oil make sure to add some butter to it.
Here are the basics on how to put this recipe together:
- Combine meat and other ingredients and mix together
- Form beef patties and place about 1/2″ away from each other
- Fry your beef patties in light oil
- Prepare marinara sauce
- Ready to serve!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: BEEF PATTY CUTLETS IN TOMATO MARINARA SAUCE
Cutlets are commonly thinly cut or grounded beef usually taken from the leg or rib section or even breast of the animal.
I prefer Ground sirloin, it is lean and tender. It has a milder flavor in comparison to ground beef. Due to having less fat in this meat it is suggested to cook the ground sirloin over low-medium heat. It tends to dry out when cooked on high heat.
Yes, you can freeze uncooked pre-seasoned cutlets as long as you keep them in an air-tight freezer bag. This can be kept in the freezer for a few months.
Yes, you can lightly coat a non-stick baking tray with a silicone liner and bake the beef cutlets at 475° for 25-35 min until done.
